The Preface is the first part of
the Eucharistic Prayer. It starts with
the familiar dialogue, “The Lord be with you… And with your spirit.” Then the priest says, “Lift up your
hearts.” At this point, the priest is
instructing us to focus on God and to pay close attention because the most
important part of Mass is about to begin.
Everyone responds, “We lift them up to the Lord.” Meaning we are focusing on God and not
distracted by the things of the world.
The priest continues, “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.” Why should we give thanks? The people respond, “It is right and just.” So, it is right and just to give thanks, but why? In general, it’s for all that God has done for us, there is nothing that we have that we did not get ultimately from God. And so, “It is truly right and just…”
