Final Blessing and Dismissal
The
Concluding Rites begin with the greeting of the priest, “The Lord be with
you.” We reply, “And with your
spirit.” We are recognizing that the
priest is the ordained minister of God, and that he is about to exercise his
priestly ministry by blessing everyone.
The
priest raises his right hand and while making the sign of the cross over the
people, he typically says, “May Almighty God bless you the Father, and the Son,
and the Holy Spirit.” The blessing is
received by the people who are slightly bowed down, a position of receptivity
and humility, and they make the sign of the cross as they are blessed by the
priest. If it is a solemn occasion, then
the priest will give a solemn blessing, which is a little longer.
After the final blessing, there is the
dismissal. In Latin, it is “Ite missa
est,” which means “Go you are dismissed.”
The word “missa” is where we get the word “Mass” and “mission.” It means “dismissal” or “sending.” We are sent out on a mission from God to
bring Jesus Christ to the world through our daily lives.
It’s best to remain at least until the closing hymn
ends. During that hymn, the priest, the
servers, and the readers, line up for the closing procession, which reminds us
that we are sent on a mission. If you
need to leave while others are staying to pray, then please exit quietly.
We should stay briefly after Mass to pray while the
Eucharistic presence of Jesus Christ remains within us (estimated 15 minutes). His spiritual presence, which remains within
our souls, is intensified by Holy Communion for those well-disposed to receive
it.
As you exit your pew, face Jesus, who is in the
tabernacle, and genuflect as a sign of reverence and submission to Him. As you use the holy water to make the Sign of
the Cross remember your baptism and your duty to live out the faith.
When
you enter the mission field, keep Jesus Christ, His commands, and Church
teaching in mind as you bring Him to others in your life.
